More than one route into AI Ethics

Unlike medicine or architecture, there is no single prescribed pathway into AI ethics. Professionals typically combine technical knowledge with an understanding of ethics, law, policy, or human behaviour, and students genuinely arrive here from very different starting points.

There is no single required stream. Students can come from Science, Humanities, or Social Sciences.
  • Science (PCM/PCB): Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, and Economics build a strong technical foundation.
  • Social Sciences: Psychology, Political Science, Philosophy, Sociology, Economics, and Legal Studies develop ethical reasoning and an understanding of society.
Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Information Technology, or Software Engineering, usually supplemented with ethics or policy courses along the way.
  • Social Science: Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, or Public Policy, often followed by postgraduate study in AI or technology policy.
  • Law: LLB, Technology Law, Cyber Law, or Intellectual Property Law, a common route into AI governance and compliance work.
  • Business: Business Analytics, Management, Economics, or Information Systems, which often leads into responsible AI consulting.
Many professionals build interdisciplinary depth through an MSc in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or AI Ethics, an MA in Philosophy, or postgraduate study in Public Policy, Technology Policy, Digital Governance, Law (LLM), or Human Computer Interaction (HCI).
Short courses in Responsible AI, AI Governance, AI Policy, Data Privacy, Machine Learning fundamentals, Explainable AI, and AI Risk Management all strengthen a student's profile.

Technical understanding

Not necessarily expert level programming, but a solid grasp of AI, machine learning, algorithms, data collection, model training, and data privacy.

Ethical reasoning

Working through difficult questions that rarely have one correct answer, such as whether AI should make hiring decisions or be trusted with a medical diagnosis.
